Survival Guide

How to Survive
The Birds

A completely serious, evidence-based field manual for the avian apocalypse, as depicted in Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 masterpiece.

Step 1: Don't Move to Bodega Bay

Seriously. Just don't.

Location Matters

Hitchcock made it crystal clear: coastal Northern California is ground zero for bird-related chaos. If you see fog rolling in over a quaint seaside town, turn around. Go inland. Take up residence in a desert. Birds hate Las Vegas for a reason.

Avoid Schoolyards

The jungle gym scene is a masterclass in why you should never let children play outside when crows start holding committee meetings on the telephone wires. If the swings are empty and the sky is full, it's already too late.

Watch the Gulls

Seagulls are the canary in the coal mine. If they seem agitated, aggressive, or are staring at you with what can only be described as malice, seek shelter. They hold grudges and they remember faces.

Step 2: Fortify Your Perimeter

Board up. Barricade. Pray.

Windows First

Every pane of glass is a target. Wood planks are your friend. The Tippi Hedren method — cowering in a corner with a lamp — is not a viable long-term strategy. Nail. Every. Window. Shut.

Chimneys Are a Weakness

Birds will pour down your chimney like feathered demons from hell. If you have a fireplace, seal it. Yes, you'll be cold. But you'll be alive.

Doors: Lock and Reinforce

Standard door locks are decorative suggestions to a determined bird. Push furniture against every entry point. If you hear tapping at the back door, do not answer it. That is not a friendly neighbor.

Step 3: Gather Supplies

Also known as: stuff you'll wish you had.

Flashlights & Batteries

The power will go out. The birds will peck through the lines. Have light. Not fire — fire attracts attention. Light attracts moths. Moths attract birds. You see the problem.

Canned Food & Water

You cannot run to the grocery store. The grocery store is where the birds want you to go. Stockpile non-perishables. Your survival depends on not being the person who has to make a supply run mid-apocalypse.

First Aid

Bird attacks are not clean. You will need bandages, antiseptic, and a strong stomach. If someone gets pecked badly, patch them up fast. The birds can smell blood. (Can they? Probably. Don't risk it.)

Step 4: Know Your Enemy

Bird behavior in crisis situations.

Crows Coordinate

Crows have a sophisticated social structure and will organize attacks with terrifying precision. If you see one crow, there are fifty more just out of sight. They're using flanking maneuvers before you've finished your coffee.

Gulls Are Brutes

Seagulls do not strategize. They smash. They are the battering ram of the bird kingdom. A gull will throw itself through a window without hesitation. Respect their commitment to violence.

Sparrows: The Sleepers

Small birds are dismissed as harmless. This is how they get you. While you're focused on the crows and gulls, sparrows slip through gaps in your defenses. Size is not a predictor of threat level in Hitchcock's world.

Step 5: The Long Haul

Psychological survival is half the battle.

Stay Calm

Panic leads to mistakes. Mistakes lead to open windows. Open windows lead to birds in your living room. Breathe. Focus. Make a plan. The moment you lose your cool is the moment a seagull gains the upper claw.

Don't Go Outside

The outside is where the birds are. The inside is where the birds are trying to get to. Do not help them by opening a door. You are safer inside than out. This seems obvious, but you'd be surprised how many horror movie characters miss this point.

Wait for Help

Eventually the authorities will notice that Bodega Bay has become a feather-filled war zone. Help will come. Probably. In the meantime, stay put, stay quiet, and stay alive.
